Urinary incontinence

Surgical Treatment of Urinary Incontinence in Women at the Trinity Women’s Health Clinic

Urinary incontinence (enuresis, incontinence) is the involuntary leakage of urine that cannot be controlled by willpower. In Korea alone, 40–50% of women suffer from this condition.

This disorder may present as an inability to hold urine during physical activity or running, and even during laughing, sneezing, or sleep.

Main causes of urinary incontinence in women:

  • Menopause – hormonal changes lead to thinning of the mucous membranes of the urogenital organs and weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments.
  • Childbirth and gynecological surgeries may cause structural changes in the pelvic organs and loss of nerve sensitivity.
  • Pelvic organ prolapse due to excess weight or heavy physical exertion.
  • Ethnicity – urinary incontinence is diagnosed more frequently in women of European descent.

At the Trinity Women’s Health Clinic, a mini-sling surgery is performed. This is a minimally invasive procedure using a special tape that supports and stabilizes the sagging urethra. The procedure takes only 10–15 minutes and offers numerous advantages. Unlike traditional surgical methods, a small incision is made in the vaginal wall, local or general anesthesia is used, leaving no visible scars, minimal pain, and no need for hospitalization.

If you live in Korea and the procedure is medically indicated, you may use national health insurance. Even with private insurance in Korea, you may receive reimbursement for surgical expenses of up to 5 million KRW, depending on your insurance policy.
